Tucked in the pages of the Old Testament prophets is a stunning story of God’s love for sexual sinners. God commands a prophet named Hosea to marry a prostitute named Gomer (which apparently was an attractive name back in the day…). Although she was unfaithful and would be unfaithful in the future, God wanted his representative to give the world a picture of the heart that God has for spiritually adulterous people. God told Hosea, “Go, show your love to your wife again, though she is loved by another and is an adulteress. Love her as the Lord loves the Israelites.” That is enduring, persistent, unconditional love.
God feels the same way about us. We may struggle to leave porn behind. We may run after other “lovers” and look for spiritual satisfaction in pixels that move in sensual ways. But God still pursues us. Although he has been spiritually “cheated on,” he still is waiting to restore this relationship. In fact, that’s why he sent his Son into the world.
